Same pitch notes (see bar 3 on Test) will not respond to manual beam setting, removing an automatic beam worked. Setting a manual beam on different pitch notes worked in the Test file but failed to work in another file (Behold. . .) in the piano part and voices, e.g. S bar11.
I apologise for possibly using incorrect terms; I'm not a real musician, just a member in our church choir and I need to hear the tune to practice, hence the transcribing into Musescore. If the score is not in SATB format already I have difficulty to find my place, another reason for me to transcribe into Musescore. Apart from that it helps the old marbles moving around ;o)

You have set the beaming property for certain notes to "No beam", which means that they will not be beamed to either of the notes on either side. As far as I can tell, the beaming is working the way you have indicated, though perhaps not the way you intended. See https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/beams#beam-icons for more information about the beam symbols and their effects.
Either (re)set the beaming individually or globally via Format > Reset beaming
In choral music though it is quite common to beam along with melismas only, there's a plugin for that, see https://musescore.org/en/project/traditional-vocal-beaming
Thanks Matt and Jojo for your invaluable help - I got it sorted now :o)
