I cannot fathom why the chords are silent when I play this file. Any ideas?

Because their Play property is disabled, check Inspector. Probably because if got imported from a pre-chord-symbols-playback version of MuseScore (pre 3.5)

Thanks very much Jojo - your fixed score plays correctly.
When I ticked the play box in Inspector against the first chord of my version, the result was that that chord sounded when I started playback but all the following ones remained silent. How do I get to set all the chords in the piece to sound?

Hit the "set as style" button ("S" icon) to make that setting to apply to all chord symbols.
