I'm getting a new laptop -- as my files get larger how much RAM would be adequate to easily run 3.6.

8gb is pretty standard. But depending on what else you do with your computer, you may want more. 16 gb is not overkill. You might also be interested in an SSD.

I'm not a gamer, either. But there is an old computer adage that says there is no such thing as too much ram. An internal SSD that has the OS on it is worth every penny. You computer will start faster ( 17 seconds, or so ), update faster, shut down faster, load programs faster. It will not be susceptible to the 100% disk usage problem. As well as a host of other advantages. You may think that speed is not all that important until you experience it.
If you were to put one in your old computer, you might be surprised.
I can work with 4GB ram without any problems.
But I am not running more than one application at a time.
