removing the whole rest
New to Musescore. How do you remove the whole rest in a new work? i thought it would automatically be removed when notes/beats are added to equal the time signature selected...?

Excatly that is the case. If you start entering notes in voice 1, as you always should.

Unless you want the first note to be on beat 2. Then you have to enter a quarter rest on beat one first.
My guess is you are making one of two mistakes. Either you are not starting your note entry with voice 1 as mentioned abive(people sometimes think they should use voice 3 when entering notes on the bottom staff of a choral arrangement, but that's not the right way), or you are using the very special-purpose "Insert" mode instead of the standard default step-time note input mode.
