length of bars
I must have done something stupid, because now I can't enter the 8th quaver in a 4/4 bar. When I try to enter it, it goes into the following bar. Help, please!

Hard to say for sure, but I'm guessing you might not be in the standard step-time note input mode, but some other mode like "reptich" instead. Check the dropdown next to the note input icon on the toolbar.
If that's not it, please attach your score and precise steps to reproduce the problem so we can understand and assist better.

I was definitely in the standard note-input mode, and I have no idea how I created the problem. A friend suggested adding an extra time signature to the offending bar, which I did. It didn't seem to make any difference; but when I then deleted it, all was well, and I was able to put in the 8th quaver! Mysterious, but a happy outcome!
