No audio after MIDI controller entry

After step-time note input using a MIDI controller, the entered notes will not play back. It's as if audio has been disabled. The audio becomes audible only after clicking Restart Audio and MIDI Devices in the preferences window -- which then renders the MIDI controller unusable until I restart the program.

Any thoughts or suggestions?
