Adding parentheses to elements other than notes
I want to enclose in parentheses elements that are not notes - for example, a trill symbol, to show that it is an editorial addition. It would look like (tr.) How do I do this?

You can add a pair of brackets as stave text with a space between them to allow the "tr" (on the same note) to fit between them and then adjust the position of the [ ] in the inspector or do it by eye with arrow keys or dragging. But it is tricky and doesn't always survive later layout changes.
Adding editorial brackets in a simpler and more consistent way has been frequently suggested but has not yet arrived. See #300462: Add square brackets to score elements to indicate editorial additions/changes
