MS4 - Change grace note played duration ?

• Dec 16, 2022 - 18:28

We can change the grace note's displayed duration, but it doesn't affect playback. Is there any way to affect playback of a grace note's duration ?
Also is it possible to have multiple grace notes ? As in- in the same voice at the same time ?

You added an appoggiatura (no stroke through stem), should be an acciaccatura instead to get the playback you mention wanting. Apooggiaturas by definition take 1/2 the main note usually.

in the future, it might well become possible to change the playback effect so appoggiaturas can play as accicaccaturas or vice versa, but for now, just enter the appropriate grace note and all is well.

Using an acciaccatura does not achieve the playback shown, which specifically asks for a double-croche (pardon my french), and this context, a J. L. Krebs Fantasia, link here, https://youtu.be/s622KiR2zHk?t=656 ,an acciaccatura would sounds even worse.

I get from this (?) is that there is currently no way in musescore to match the displayed and sounded durations of grace notes, both app- and acc-. I guess the appogiatura is defined in code as the half of the note it's on, and the displayed duration is purely decorational. A switch could be used to change between those two defs, in the Properties panel like this:

I imagine a simple design like this wouldn't be too hard to implement in code, in a way it's just changing a variable.

As a baroque enthusiast, I always encounter ornament problems. The options given for (all) ornaments are in many contexts quite strange and/or don't make musical sense. Is it possible to create a way for (experienced) users to change the effect of ornaments ? Is there already a way ?

What is needed, Ultimately, a way to edit the Midi info directly without affecting the score, what is displayed. I suppose the return of the piano roll could be useful for that, but assume it is in the works.

Yes, it's definitely known that more controls over playback of grace notes and ornaments is desirable, just a matter of prioritization. I'd expect to see it addressed for grace notes at least in the not distance future though. And you are correct - appoggiaturas always play by the same rules, the visual appearance is just visual. Same for acciaccaturas.

Meanwhle, best workaound I know is a separate staff just for playback, add the notes then make it invisible. And turn off playback of the corresponding notes on the visible staff. Or make the playback staff an ossia (via the cutaway & hide when empty options in staff properties) so people reading can see your suggested interpretation as well.
