Musescore 4 launches the startup screen and then dies...

I installed Musescore 4 in reaction to the e-mail promoting it.
To my surprise Musescore 4 just doesn't work at all: the program launches, the startscreen shows shortly and that's it. Looking in taskmanager... Musescore isn't mentioned!
I am using the MuseScore-4.0.0-x86_64.msi file ...
I tried deleting it again and reboot the PC (Windows 10) and do a new install... to no avail: all I get upon launching Musescore 4 is the start-up screen which stays on for a few seconds.
