Play only one note in a chord

I have a piece where two instruments have small, parenthesized, notes over or under a desired note - the smaller notes are notes they should both play if one cannot hit a particular high note. However, in the playback I would like to suppress the the parenthesized notes. I have tried simply unchecking play, but this removes both notes from the playback. Is there any way to do this?
