Untied notes when adding notes above/below tied notes

Is there a way to automatically tie the notes added above or below tied notes on the same part? Currently, if I add (for example) an E above a C tied to another C, the E presents as two notes and I have to tie the Es manually. Am I missing something, or is this something missing?
