If I alter the spacing of the lines in a staff, nd increase it to 1.5, is it possible to enlarge the note heads to suit?

Well, don't increase the spacing of staff lines in the first place, not that way, but instead increase the space setting in the Page settings dialog, that not only increases the distance between staff lines but also the noteheads and a lot of other things
