Bongos, two drums at once

How would I notate a bongo rhythm where the high drum is eighth notes, and the low drum is quarter notes, in other words, both drums at once on every other beat? I can put the eighth notes in, but trying to add the quarter notes, they go in as eighth notes. Also, every now and then, the quarter note is a rest instead of a beat. How would that be done?
