How do I use the autosave file in Musescore 4?

• Feb 8, 2023 - 06:33

Musescore 4 (4.0.1.230121751, revision 9b70a8c) running under Windows 10 crashed as I worked on a score. There is a .mscz.autosave file from a few minutes before the crash, but it's unclear how to use it:
* On restarting, Musescore 4 does not issue a "The previous session ended unexpectedly" box; instead, it starts normally and shows the score-selection screen without asking whether I'd like to restore the session.
* I removed the .autosave file extension and double-clicked on the file in the file manager. The Musescore 4 splash screen appeared, but Musescore crashed before reaching, e.g., the score-selection screen.
* Searching the handbook yields instructions for Musescore 3, not 4, and they are inapplicable.

This must have happened to others, but searching for "autosave" in the forum produced nothing, which seems implausible.

Actually, searching for "autosave" after I created this topic still turned up nothing, even though "How do I use the autosave file in Musescore 4"? is in the list. How does one search the forum??

I was able to open the unzipped .mscx file in MuseScore 3 after deleting what appeared to be several identical rehearsal marks. MuseScore 3 then claimed the file to be corrupted and its 'Show Details' presented this list:
Measure 47, staff 1 incomplete. Expected: 4/4; Found: 0/1
Measure 49, staff 1 incomplete. Expected: 4/4; Found: 0/1
Measure 135, staff 1 incomplete. Expected: 4/4; Found: 0/1
Measure 136, staff 1 incomplete. Expected: 4/4; Found: 0/1

Those were 4 completely empty measures which I populated with measure rests by performing the swap voices fix.

Just got home... downloaded HarrisonTunes-3 and it opened with no problem. So first, I owe you a beer... if you get to philly, let me know...

I do believe this is a bug and hope the team looks into it: If a file SAVES with no errors, it always must OPEN with no errors. Detecting a problem when we open a file and not having a recovery path isn't acceptable to anyone, no matter what software we are using.

Now, I want to prevent from this happening again.... and I am just guessing, but maybe if the Rehearsal Marks are what caused the problem.... I only use them (under Text menu) because it has nice bold text in a box which makes it easy to see... I have never had a problem using them in prior versions of MuseScore. The other thing I could do is a Save As (new filename) every time I save... then close and reopen. If a problem, go back to the prior version of the file. Happy to get any other thoughts. thanks.
