Adding temelo into 12/8 bar

• Mar 29, 2023 - 07:46

Hi,
Im hoping someone might be able to help me with this. I have one bar which has a tremolo that spans what is effectively 3 measures (because i can only work in simple time signatures) of a 12/8 bar (see attached image)

I would be grateful if someone could let me know how to do this.

Thanks.

Measure and bar are basically the same thing, so I don't understand what you are asking. Is your attached image what you would like to achieve or the results of your efforts (which you find unsatisfactory)?

I think the OP means "beats" where it says "measures". That is: "... one bar which has a tremolo that spans what is effectively 3 beats ...".

The problem with this is that in 12/8 there are three eighth-notes to every beat. which means the first three beats take up nine eighth-notes. However in the picture there is a tremolo dotted half-note which only takes six eighth-notes.

And the second problem is that there is no note you can write in this type of tremolo which represents the length of nine eighth-notes. A whole-note represents eight eighth-notes and a dotted whole note represents 12 eigth-notes. and there is nothing in between.

I see two options:

  1. write out the notes of the tremolo. All of them
  2. write a tremolo for each beat using dotted quarter-notes. An in this case, I think you need to start on the upper note on beat 2 (and 4).
