p-f (or mf-ff) at the beginning of a section to be repeated

I have seen p-f or mf-ff at the beginning of a section to be repeated. I believe it means to play it softly the first time, then loud the second time through. (Or mf first time, ff second time).

Can this be implemented in playback somehow?
