changing instruments

i was wondering how i can change a C trumpet to a B flat trumpet. i was also wondering if could assign different instruments to certain parts on scores (ie, if i thought a clarinet would be better for a part rather than a flute) could it transpose the part to fit the instrument and match the key of the score? would love to know!

Assuming you mean you simply want to change the whole part from one instrument to another, you right click the staff, Staff Properties, then Change Instrument.

Usually changing brass instruments to a different base pitch is done by using a different crook.

ie a piece of brass tubing of a different length is inserted into the instrument.

I am actually looking to transpose the score from a C-part to a B-flat part. These directions only tell me how to add the word 'trumpet' or 'trombone' etc. to the part. How does one transpose to the other instrument?

On my computer, for whatever reason (and I have the latest possible musescore), if I merely change the instrument, it does not change the key. I have to use the 'play transposition' in order to actually change the key. I don't know if there is something else that has to be set for this to happen with just the change instrument command, but in my copy, the key does NOT change.

To be clear, there are several ways to change "instrument":

1) long / short names in in Staff Properties
2) the Change Instrument button in Staff Properties
3) Sound in Mixer

Of these, only #2 changes transposition. It works in both 1.3 and in 2.0 Beta/Nightly, however in the latter, the notes are transposed but the key signatures are left alone. So for now in 2.0 builds, you'd have to fix key signatures manually. See #31001: Wrong key when changing instrument.

Which version of MuseScore, which OS? And can you post the score you are having problms with and precise steps to reproduce the problem?

Works for me on both 1.3 and 2.0 Nightly with the scores I tried. But I think there was a bug in earlier builds - from maybe three or four months ago? - that might have had the effect you are describing.
