musescore not outputting any note events, just control events

on Mac, I'm only seeing midi control events on channel 1, but no note events, for any score, on any channel. oddly, between sustain pedal on/off, I'm also seeing a bunch of pitch wheel = 0 events.
does anyone know how I can get this to output note events?
