ties didn't work (only 1 instance)

• Jul 1, 2023 - 13:18

Hello engravers:

I'm not able to get ties to work for one of my chords.

What's odd is that the line that normaly goes thru a note head in the high C of that chord isn't there... it is missing.

The problem starts in the D9 at the end of measure 15 ( that I want to tie, but can't) and the beginning of measure 16 of the attachment.

I don't know why you gave individual notes a y-offset. That doesn't change the pitch, only the position and seems to be there but has a different pitch.
Test yourself, click on the single notes of beat 4 in measure 15 and of beat 1 in measure 16: they don't have the same pitch! That's why ties not working.

You can change the pitch of notes with the up and down arrow keys by one semitone step.

Repair: select both measures 15 and 16 and press Ctrl-R. Then move the chord notes to their correct position with the arrow keys. And apply the ties.

Hi HildeK:

Please accept my sincere thanks for your important reply!

I did as you instructed and tested the notes of beat 4 in measure 15 and of beat 1 in measure 16.

Wow! They are not the same!

HildeK, I'm just a rookie, and do not know enough to do an offset. Any offset in the score means I made some sort of inadvertent mistake that I did not realize that was probably caused by my fingers... that are about as deft as dinner sausages.

HildeK, how to I fix this? Seems like a BIG mistake!!

This is a homework project for an old man (me) from a pretty good arranger (my teacher, Bob Sneider at the Eastman School).

I've attached the pdf of his hand written arrangement, along with a "complete" arrangement that I've restranscribed into Musescore... with more measure than you saw before.

Would you kindly, describe what i did inadevertently along with how to fix this, please?

Many thanks!!!

Unfortunately I don't know how this could happen by accident. As far as I know, you can only achieve this in the inspector via the y-offset.
Anyway, if you select the single notes from beat 4 in bar 15, you will see in the Inspector that under 'Chords' a y-offset of -0.50sp is given. This moves the chord up, just as if it were the next note above. In fact, it's only the wrong place! For all notes this offset must be zero!

To be sure that there are no more places with the same problem do the following:
Select a note with the right mouse button, then select "Select / All similar elements" from the menue. All notes will be blue. And now press Ctrl-R to reset their position. Now all offset notes are back in the place that corresponds to their pitch.

You can also just select everything with Ctrl-A and apply Ctrl-R.
However, this addtionally resets manually moved lyrics, system text, articulations and also the chord symbols back to their original positions. That is what I did in the attached file.

Unfortunately I can't do anything with the PDF, I understand very little about chords. I'm a horn player and there are neither chords nor fretboard diagrams ... :-).

[Edit]
You can't still add a tie from measure 15, beat 4, to measure 16, beat 1, because both chords have a different pitch. You need to correct this before.

Hi HildeK:

Thanks for your complete reply. I am grateful for your effort to set me straight.

I made 2 errors: on was clicking on something in the inspector pallet by mistake, and the other was the chords in that D9 over the 2 measures were not the same... they were wrong.

I fixed both problems!!

Many thanks!
