Playback is at half speed suddenly?

• Jul 25, 2023 - 02:31

I've been using MuseScore for a couple of months now, and while it's been quite the adjustment from Finale, I'm finally comfortable with it for the purposes I use it. Today, however, when I went to continue working on a piece, the playback is doing something odd. Everything is pitched down an octave, and the tempo is halved in playback - the timer shows every "second" of playback actually taking two seconds. To my knowledge, I didn't change anything - I even did a full settings reset, and it didn't fix it. All audio drivers are up to date, and a system restart did not fix the problem. Any ideas what might have happened, and how to fix it?

Did you do a restart? Or did you shut down, Let the system think about it's choices, then reboot. A restart doesn't always clear everything.

Full shut down. Checked updates and drivers. I'm at my wit's end here. I exported the file to an MP3 and it sounds the way it should, which tells me the issue is SOMEWHERE in MuseScore's playback, but I don't know where to look at this point. It's just so frustrating, everything was working perfectly yesterday evening.

I have had this same exact issue. It happened to me when I didn't change anything, been using it for a month or so working on a chart and all of the sudden everything plays back at half speed and pitched down an octave lower. Has anyone found a fix for this yet?

Found a fix. If on windows, go to Control Panel > Change Sound Card Settings > Playback. Double click your audio output and navigate to advanced settings. Adjust your "Default Format" to 24 bit and 44100 Hz. Mine was on 16 bit, which causes the pitch to drop an octave and slow down halfway in musescore.
