"Your system has run out of application memory" notification box and not responding.

When I was attempting to minimise an instrument in a score, MuseScore was not responding. A "loading wheel" started turning and an error message popped up saying "your system has run out of application memory", indicating MuseScore's application memory usage as 47GB (compared to Google Crome using around 80MB). This application memory usage seemed much too high to me. After some Google searches I was wondering if I should adjust something, clear up some storage by deleting some applications or if there might be a "memory leak". I'm not sure if I understand the problem correctly. Is there anyone who would be able to assist so that I can continue to use MuseScore normally?
