Exploding an xml file to string quartet..?
Hello, I'm new to this forum, please be gentle with me ;-) So, this is what I'm struggling with: I'm a guitarist, and I'm trying to arrange my solo guitar compositions fo string quartet. So I have recorded my guitar and used Anthem score to make a xml file of it. I can import this in MuseScore, then it appears in one staff of course, but I can add staves and use the explode function to spread the notes in 4 separate voices/staves. But then all the staves will be the same instrument with the same clef. What I want is of course to have violin 1 & 2 in treble clef, then Viola in alto clef and cello in bass clef. Is this possible, and how? Thanks in advance for your help <3

Change the instruments to what you want from the stave/parts properties menu (accessed by a right click on an empty part of the stave). See https://musescore.org/en/handbook/4/setting-your-score#changing-instrum…

Thanks, I tried that, but when I change the clef to alto or bass for the viola or cello part, the clef changes on all staves, it seems like they don't want to be separated into poarts like I want them to..

That sounds like you have not added extra instruments in the initial set up but have done something else (not sure what though). If you attach the .mscz file here someone can investigate further.

Like mentioned I opened an xml file (made in Anthem Score) in MuseScore, and it came up as a single part on a single staff of course. Then I added extra staves, and "exploded" it to spread the notes out on four different parts. But it seems the different staves are treated as just four parts of one and the same instrument; when changing the clef on one part/stave, it affects everything. So it makes sense what you're saying that I need to add extra instruments, not just staves - but I can't find any way to do this.. Unfortunately I don't have access to the file right now..

See the link in my earlier post. That takes you to the handbook article that describes how to add/change/remove instruments.
[Edit] Oh, you say you did that. What went wrong?
Post the score when you can get at it and someone will surely help further.

Like mentioned; when I changed part 3 to Viola /alto clef, the other parts were changed too, and the same happened when I changed part 4 to cello/bass clef.

Adding staves is different from adding instruments

I know, but apparently I'm not able to add instruments, only staves.. I can change instruments and clefs, but that affect the whole score/all parts.. Or am I missing something..? Maybe this just cannot be done with an imported xml file?

Press i, in that dialog add violins, violas, cellos, etc.

Yes, I know, I tried that, but it still didn't work like expected. However, I think maybe I've found out where things went wrong now.. There's a little arrow that I guess I also must click to actually add the instrument, and not only the stave (rookie mistake..) But I'm not able to test this thoroughly until I get home from the cabin on wednesday, I will report back then. Thanks for your help so far :-)

So, as I said in my earlier reply, please attach your score (.mscz file) here. That will save a lot of guess work.
If you follow the instructions in the handbook, then it should work. If it is not working then either you have found a bug or you have misunderstood the instructions. Either way, we are not going to progress much more without seeing the score to confirm a bug or to identify your misunderstanding.

Sorry, but the file is on my desktop computer at home, and I don't have access to it at the moment. But like I said above, I think (and hope) I have found the solution now. I'll report back later. Thanks for your help so far :-)

Update; I have checked and confirmed now that the reason for my problems was this little arrow that I had to click before clicking just "ok" (see attached screenshot (PS. it's in Norwegian..)) So i thought I had added instruments, but I had actually just added staves to one instrument. By clicking the mentioned arrow before clcking ok, I can add instruments too. Thank you for helping me out, and sorry for the rookie mistake.. ;-)

No worries. A solution you find yourself is one that you will remember. It is my remembered experience gained from correcting my own errors that I hope to share here.
I can change instruments and clefs, but that affect the whole score/all parts..

Again and for you too: score needed...

I suspect maybe you have missed that little arrow too.. See my comment above :-)
