Create concurrent melody line without notes attaching to existing note stems

I'm wanting to create a secondary melody line (alto) utilizing small note heads, but I don't want the notes to attach to the primary melody note stems where they match up because the words and rhythms are different. I can't figure out how to do that on the same staff line. Any help would be appreciated. I've attached a screenshot of something similar to what I'm trying to do.
