Volta for Second Repeat
Using MuseScore 3.6.2, I followed the instructions on https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/voltas to add a volta at the end of the verse and before the chorus. That worked and it went back to the top of the score on play. However, adding a "2" in the Inspectors-> Volta -> Repeat list did not work, and it went on to the chorus. I tried several notations:
1, 2
1 - 2
1., 2.
Still didn't work. I also changed the Text box the same way, with no change. Am I missing something here?
Thanks.

1,2 is the right way. But You may also need to increase the play count of the measure with the end repeat barline

Great, thanks for that tip, Jojo. I changed the play count in the measure with the end repeat barline to 3. That was by right-clicking the measure and selecting Measure Properties, not in the Inspector. I also had to select the volta and open the Inspector and set Volta -> Repeat to 3, otherwise it repeated three times but on the third omitted that measure.
Worth noting that the help page for repeats and jumps for MuseScore 3 is at https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/repeats-and-jumps, separate from the voltas help page at https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/voltas.
