Text cursor is offset

Referring to the attached screenshot, the text cursor is positioned incorrectly (2 characters to the right, I think) .
So if I were to type 's' where the cursor is, the 's' would appear in the correct position next to 'que'
If I move the cursor just to the right of the 'e' and type 's', the 's' appears between the as in the 2nd image
What is going on here?
