Musescore 4.any has stutters

• Dec 27, 2023 - 19:19

I've checked: I have the minimum required specs. I'm using MS Basic, didn't even try Muse Sounds. I've done everything in that troubleshooting post - reducing mixer volumes, reducing quality in system options, even far past what was suggested, and only got distortion from that endeavour.
So basically I'm stuck on the last 3.x release, including its bugs (such as custom note intensity sometimes not responding, grace notes not showing up on their actual timing in the pianoroll...), and, in the future, potential security risks...

I doubt that there will be security risks using version 3. Do you mean the "How to"?
If lower the bit rate too far things get worse. I've seen seen MuseScore not even start in some cases. It is possible to run the program even if you have lesser specs. So we just have to find the right settings for you. What are your computer specs? You do have an SSD?

If you are using an external USB sound device, disconnect it and try the settings again with computer speakers. In some cases, you may need to select your speakers in Edit>Preferences>I/O> Audio device, rather than "Default". There should be a down arrow to do so. Buffer set to 4069 can't hurt. If you plug in headphones (always before starting MuseScore) you might need to select them in Audio device. Turning off "Exclusive mode" can be important, also. Don't gloss over that possibility.

I had that experience with the beta release but today I tried MS 4.2.0 without MuseHub. To my surprise it works smoothly with Basic sounds and with Pianoteq 8 VST. CPU was around 52% when using the VST. My PC is below spec. so there may be hope for you.

My PC: 12 years old, Windows 10, mechanical hard drive, 4GB RAM, dual-core 3 Ghz Intel CPU, integrated graphics and integrated sound card. Is your PC below this spec?

Note also that MS3.7 is available from GitHub. This has bug fixes and enhancements.

Since the codebase for 3.6.2 has been around for quite some time and is open source, the likelihood of security issues is low. MS4 with MuseHub has an unknown level of risk because MuseHub runs with system privileges. This is not open source so cannot easily be checked for vulnerabilities.
