pitch

• Feb 15, 2024 - 18:56

I recently upgraded to the version 4.2.1.240230937 (does it really need to be this long of a revision number?)
I am inputting a score for a Bb clarinet. However when I play along with the score, the note played by Musescore is a full step higher. For example in the foot note at the bottom of the score it says
"Note pitch C3 (sounding as D3), Duration...etc..."

I suspect I did a keystroke accidently that changed the pitch of the playback, but I have not been able to get it changed to play the pitch of an actual Bb instrument as its written.

Can someone steer me to the solution? Thanks

A Bb clarinet is a transposing instrument. This is the reason for "pitch C3 (sounds like D3), duration...etc... ". That's even wrong, it should be "C3, sounds like Bb2"!

Now it would be interesting to know what you did. What was your source for it? E.g. a non-transposing instrument? Which one? Or is it your own composition?

In the first case, I would recommend transcribing the notes for exactly this instrument and then assigning a clarinet to the staff.

In the second case, I would switch to sounding notation and write the notes there. If you then write a C3, it will sound like C3. For the clarinettist, however, you have to switch off the sounding notation again. He will then see a D3 on the sheet of music, but his instrument will sound like a C3.

By the way: a Bb clarinet will not be able to play a C3, D3 or Bb2. That would have to be C4, D4 or Bb3. At least that's what my MuseScore 3 tells me.
