Decrescendo to end of note
What is the best way to show a decrease in volume over the duration of a note, say to the end of the last note of a phrase? You can't place a p over the following rest (neither would it be correct to, I don't believe?).
Is it best to place the p manually just at the end of the last note?
In which case the playback isn't going to work is it?

One way might be, if the last note is a whole note, make a dotted half tied to a quarter note. Put the p dynamic on the quarter so that the hairpin ends at the p. You could do all manner of hidden tricks to make it look like you might want. Personally, I don't think it is worth it.
Actually I was talking rubbish. You can place a dynamic over a following rest (Behind Bars by Elaine Gould) . Musescore allows you to to this, and it has the desired effect on playback,

Off course you can place a dynamic at the end of a long note. Weather she says so or not. My response was incomplete, anyway. I was thinking of a situation where the is a dynamic at the end of a measure that has a a whole note. That doesn't work. And yet consider a whole note at the end of a piece. To get a fadeout of that note, you have three choices. You can add a measure, as you found out. Or you could do as I suggested. Or you could forget playback and place the hairpin.
