Metronome playing through Midi interface even though it is turned off

When I play my score (in 4/4 time) via the Midi interface to my piano, with the Metronome turned off, I am hearing a note on my piano, 4 beats plus a different tone for the separator bar. It continues to play even when there are no notes on my score. I have not found any way to turn this off.
