Significant latency on MIDI note input (version 4.3.1.241490900)

ALL combinations experience SIGNIFICANT (~1s) latency.

Computers
Dell Precision 5550 (i9-10885H, 32GB RAM, Windows 11 23H2 22635.3646)
- Audio device: Speaker (Realtek(R) Audio) -- tried all Buffer sizes
Surface Laptop 4 (i7-1065G7, 16GB RAM, Windows 11 23H2 22635.3646)
- Audio device: System default OR Realtek High Definition Audio(SST)

MIDI devices:
M-Audio Hammer 88, Casio PX-870, nektar SE61 (connected direct to USB)

fwiw, I just installed VMPK and get about ~500ms latency.

testing other virtual instruments for comparison.

in MIDI-OX, I see the message with no perceptible latency.

However, when I set MIDI-OX to play the note through MS GS Wavetable Synth, there is comparable latency to VMPK (500-800ms, by my guess).
