If you have MuseScore 4
There are different ways to change tempo depending on what you want.

Can you describe more exactly what feature you'd like to see to improve adjusting tempos?

How about if where the tempo appears on the top menu bar, it was clickable and would lead you to a function for changing the tempo?

Alasdair: As I described above it is ... almost. In my third option, instead of only clicking it, you have to drag that panel off the margins and then you can make temporary tempo changes. If you want to make permanent changes, use the first and second description, which will not involve that "Play Panel" at all.
Dylan, I don't think that OP was asking for a new feature. I think they were just asking how to do a thing. MANY people put their questions and comments in the wrong sub-forums. :-(

I was generously assuming the poster chose the "feature request" forum because they felt there needed to be a better feature for changing the tempo...

"a function for changing the tempo?" like adding a tempo text from a palette perhaps?
