If you have MuseScore 4

There are different ways to change tempo depending on what you want.

  1. If you want to set the tempo permanently, add a tempo value from the Tempo palette. This (and the next) is what SteveBlower suggested.
  2. If you already have a tempo value, you can edit it. If it's a metronome value, just double-click it and change the number. If it's a traditional Italian tempo marking (e.g., "Allegro" or "Lento"), you can modify the tempo it gives the score on the Properties tab of the tempo marking.
  3. If, on the other hand, you simply want to change it temporarily, you can undock the Play Panel from the upper right. You do this by clicking the six dots just to the right of the Rewind / Play/Stop / Loop buttons. When undocked, it has a slider that allows you to temporarily slow or speed the piece by a percentage. This will affect any tempo markings in the score by the same percentage.

Check the Handbook for Tempo for more information.

Alasdair: As I described above it is ... almost. In my third option, instead of only clicking it, you have to drag that panel off the margins and then you can make temporary tempo changes. If you want to make permanent changes, use the first and second description, which will not involve that "Play Panel" at all.

Dylan, I don't think that OP was asking for a new feature. I think they were just asking how to do a thing. MANY people put their questions and comments in the wrong sub-forums. :-(
