Slow playback remains after changing playback speed to slower then to normal (100%) -- with workaround

• Aug 15, 2024 - 21:31

Occurring with multiple scores and in different places on each, after playing a section slowly (e.g., 75% using the Tempo slider after undocking the Play Toolbar) and then changing the slider back to 100%, I have encountered random score locations where the sound will suddenly slow and remain at that slower speed.

For example, working on measures numbers in the 40s and playing them slowly, then resetting tempo to 100% and starting D.C., 8 bar repeat at top, playback suddenly slows at the second ending (the second measure 8). (There is an explicit tempo marking at the top; 4 stave sax quartet.)

Work-around:
I discovered that adding the same tempo marking used at the top at the measure where it slows, and then removing that tempo marking (even without playing it) usually restores the tempo for the entire score. In the above example, I add and then remove it from measure 8 (nowhere near measure 40ish where I was working at slower speed), and it's fixed (at least for a while).

Hopefully, the fact that an added and then removed tempo marking fixes (at least temporarily) the erroneous tempo change, will be of some use for those working on fixing the slowed playback occurrences many seem to experience.

Yes, this just might help some people.

Personally, I never use the tempo slider. Having to think in percentages gives me a headache. It seems to me that if you need to add then delete a tempo, then why not do that instead of messing with the slider. When I want to hear something slower, I add a slower tempo mark. Then delete it when I'm done.
