Unusable (echoey) sound in Musescore 4 on Linux

I'm using the official appimage directly from the Musescore site on Debian Stable (Bookworm). The sound is like someone applied a long delay with far too many repeats and pushed the fader all the way up. A Google search reveals I am hardly the only one having this problem, but I have yet to find a clear fix. The preferences dialog is beyond useless; the only option in the output dropdown is "default". Does anyone know how to fix this problem?
