Aligning Voices 1 and 2 in a staff

• Sep 21, 2024 - 14:30

I have an SATB hymn where the soprano (voice 1) and alto (voice 2) are on the treble clef; while the tenor (voice 1) and bass (voice 2) are on the bass clef. In both clefs, the Voice 2 is slightly to the left of where Voice 1 is. Why does that happen, and how can I "realign" the two voices?

On a related question: is there a way to get Voice 2 to automatically be "stem up" when it shares the same rhythm as Voice 1? This is a common feature of hymns, especially when low in the staff, to facilitate the placement of lyrics under the notes.

The attached score is an example of misalignment. I am formatting it in a 9:16 aspect ratio to facilitate projection on a screen.
Thanks!

You have changed the scale to 150% in Staff/Part Properties. It's not intended for this.
After return to 100%, see: 1Still, Still with Thee.mscz

To increase the size, continue to do it in Format / Page settings, eg: 2Still, Still with Thee.mscz

And if you want Voice 2 to display the stems up: right-click on a note of this voice / Select / More / Tick “same voice" / Ok
And press shortcut “X” to flip the stems.

Alternatively, instead of voice 2, choose voice 3, whose stems will automatically be displayed upwards.
In your score, you can do immediately: Select All (Ctrl + A) / menu “Tools” / Voices / Exchange voices 2.3
