getting controls back

When I open any score, the pallettes, instruments, etc are all enabled and visible, but when I click on the score, they all disappear. It looks like the score is in a tab and in front of everything else. My workspace is set to default. Last time I had this issue I only solved it by factory resetting and I really don't want to have to do that again but it's impossible for me to do anything like this.
