cannot enter percussion

Please help. I cannot enter single notes in my percussion parts. As soon as I enter one note, the whole part fills to the end as though I were holding a key down. It also sounds like a machine gun. I'm at my wits end. I have no idea what to do. I'm not uploading a file because it doesn't matter what file I'm in.
