tempo is not holding

• Nov 1, 2024 - 21:47

I'm trying to warm up to MS4 but it's a challenge. The latest is that the playback tempo changes every time I look around. I changed the tempo in the playback window in the upper right by undocking the window and moving the slider to the tempo I want, which is 68. I then carefully set it back in place so as not to move the slider. I also pulled the tempo text, half note = 80, into the chart from the left options and changed it to read 68. But even though the text says 68, the playback tempo changes to something else. It's not consistent, changing from 68 to 120 or 68 to 55 or 68 to 75. How do I lock in the tempo once I've chosen it? I've also struggled with some instruments dropping out randomly from playback. I'm playing back what I've got, and suddenly the saxophones are silent. Next time I play that section back the saxes play. Is there a setting fix for either or both of these?

Did you mean quarter note = 80, which you changed to 68?
Personally, I would only use the tempo text. Seems faster than un-docking the slider anyway. Which I think is only for temporary use.
Please post a score that shows the prop-out problem. I know it can be random. Do you pan your scores? That can help with being able to hear everything.

@bobp : No, from their description, I'm fairly sure they are changing the tempo from the Playback Panel.

@moogooch : There are two ways to change tempo. The one you are doing is explicitly a temporary change.

a) To make a temporary change of tempo. (For example, to try different tempos and see which works best for the sound you want): Undock the Playback Panel by clicking and dragging down the six dots button at top, right of center. Use the slider bar to adjust the tempo up or down by a percentage. IMPORTANT: this change is explicitly temporary and will reset to 100% when the score is closed and re-opened.

b) To make a permanent change of tempo: Add a tempo marking to the score from the Tempo palette. See Tempo markings for full details. If you do not want the tempo marking to be in the printed score but you still want the playback to change tempo, add the tempo marking and then make it invisible by pressing V while selected. (Note: this last is a toggle command which will make ANYTHING invisible or visible.)

@TheHutch : No. The part of the OP I was referring to is this sentence: " I also pulled the tempo text, half note = 80, into the chart from the left options and changed it to read 68. " They are trying to use both ways at once and that is a problem.
