Musescore Studio 4.4.4 won’t play anything, big or small.
I can no longer get MS to play anything. Indeed, I cannot get it to make a sound. Dorico and Sibelius are working ok on my computer, but MS is silent. See attached.

Try "Help -> Revert to factory settings".

Thank you for your suggestion. I was sure that I tried this, to no avail. However, I went throught the rest procedure again, and then loaded a very simple score. Alas, the result was exactly the same as before: I click PLAY and the blue cursor appears,... and is motionless.
Thank you again.
Michael.

Follow these instructions to turn off Exclusive Mode. It might work.

Thank you for your suggestion bobjp.
Exclusive Mode was already turned off.
In Musescore->Preferences->Audio&Midi, my audio device is Speakers(Sound Blaster AE-5), the same as it has always been for previous versions of MS that worked perfectly well. I am unable to set the buffer size, and I don't recall if that was the case for previous versions of MS.
I followed the suggestions in https://musescore.org/en/node/339915, but that didn't change the behaviour of the current version of MS on my computer: 64GB, Intel 24 core, etc.

Interesting. Exclusive Mode is usually ON by default. I have Sibelius and it was suggested long ago to turn it off
You should have 4 different choices for Buffer. What is it set at?
Did you just update to 4.4.4?

Exclusive Mode: For reasons similar to your good self, I have turned it off some time ago, well before MS 4.4.4 installation. I use Dorico most of the time, and Sibelius just a bit. Both run well.
"You should have 4 different choices for Buffer. What is it set at?" I see the options, but no buffer size will "stick". No matter what I choose, the Buffer entry remains blank.
Yes, I did just update to MS 4.4.4. The versions of MS before this worked ok with my current computer (64GB, Intel 24-core CPU, SoundblasterX AE-5), and Dorico and Sibelius as well.

The log files show a problem with your Sound Blaster. Possibly an out dated driver. You can open the log with Notepad.
It also shows no instrument ID for any instruments.
If you have onboard audio rather than the sound blaster, you might try it to see it the program works. Or an external audio device you can try?
However, no instrument IDs seems like MuseSampler did not install correctly. That folder is not far from where you found log files

The drivers for the Sound BlasterX AE-5 are the latest, but....
In the Speakers Properties (see jpg attachment), there is a square "Enable audio enhancements", which was clicked. I unclicked it, and... MS 4.4.4 now plays correctly! All the sound packages are there, including those that I purchased for Dorico. They play!
I have never noticed this Speaker option before, and I unclicked it here on the basis of "Poke something and see what happens". Amazing.
Thanks bobjp for your assistance in locating this quite obscure solution.

Interesting. That and hardware acceleration are both checked on my system. Ya never know. I'm so glad you got it working.
Great, now this is another thing I have to try to remember to suggest to people :)
Now go forth and be bold with your music.
