this "whine" effect

• Feb 1, 2025 - 05:46

hey, i'm making composing some random marching band music, and I wanted a better transition from the opening to the actual good stuff (loud, loud, great chords). I looked around and I found the 2024 bluecoats show, using the "whine" effect that sounds real good and would be great for my piece

the blue devils also do it in their 2024 show, this time a slower "whine"
(reference: https://youtube.com/clip/UgkxDDR-4uNHHcg6QD28s74piD5NLOvJBzTG?si=PQEw7o…)

does anyone know how to replicate this "whine"? is it some combination of synthesizers or is it just impossible? any form of input would be great :)

I hear the "whine", as you describe it in the first link, but not in the second.

Trombones and (to a lesser extent) F horns can make this kind of smooth glissando. Most other marching band instruments cannot. The glissando markings available in MuseScore Studio don't sound like this, even when applied to trombones or F horns. I have a hard time imagining a synthesizer being used in a marching band.

Perhaps you could contact someone from that marching band organization and ask them how they did it. *shrug* A little digging on the university's website (I'm assuming that's a university marching band???) should be able to find a contact.
