Decline in Muse Strings Quality – Can We Revert to a Previous Version?

• Feb 26, 2025 - 05:13

Hi everyone,

I’ve been a long-time user of Muse Strings and absolutely loved the library before Muse Hub expanded into what it is today. In fact, I found the original Muse Strings to be better than many of my paid string libraries. However, after updating Muse Hub, I noticed a significant drop in sound quality.

It’s disappointing to see that as MuseScore has grown into a more commercial platform, the free sound libraries seem to have been downgraded, possibly to encourage users to purchase premium libraries like Spitfire and Berlin Strings. I have audio recordings comparing the older Muse Strings to the current version (after the most recent update), and the difference is clear. Normally, an update improves sound quality, but in this case, it seems to have done the opposite.

For new users, the change may not be as noticeable, but for those of us who have used Muse Strings for a while, the degradation is hard to ignore. It feels like the quality is being gradually reduced over time, which is really unfortunate.

Given that many users have raised concerns about this, I’d like to ask:

  1. Why was the sound quality changed?
  2. Is there any way to reinstall a previous version of Muse Strings?
Even after purchasing Berlin Strings and Chamber Strings, I still found something uniquely good about Muse Strings that set it apart. I’d really like the option to go back to the earlier version if possible.

Thanks in advance for any insights!

  1. The sound quality has improved vastly in v.4. If you hear a decrease in quality, I suspect you've got something set incorrectly in the sound settings.

  2. Uninstall your current version. You will likely have to delete folders and registry entries. Once it's gone completely, install any version you want from the Download page. Click Download at the top of this page, then Software. On the Download page, slide down the page to the section headed Older and unsupported versions.

It may be worthwhile to also take a look at the very bottom of that page: the section headed System Requirements. If your computer doesn't meet all these requirements, that MIGHT (???) explain the poor sound quality.

I think the OP is about an earlier version of Muse Strings. Not MuseScore.

I agree that string sounds have improved since the early days of version 4. At first they used to swell on quarter note figures. Violins1 and solo 1used to be very sloppy and inconsistent. I used to have to use Violins 2 and solo 2 because they where less odd. I think it possible that any recent changes may be to make them work with the new sound flag system.
