Musescore Studio crashed my Mac

• Mar 21, 2025 - 23:00

My Musescore Version 4.5.0.250721848 crashed my Mac laptop today. Everything went non-responsive. Shutting down the machine and restarting was required.

I'm afraid I can not recall just what I was doing when this happened (other than I was entering a score), but it was annoying. I could not go to another app, bring up a system menu, nothing. Power off and restart was required.

Is there a reason to assume that MuseScore was the cause of the system crash? Or did your system simply crash while MuseScore happened to be the frontmost app?
The reason I'm asking is that it should not really be possible that an application causes the OS to crash; the OS is supposed to have protections against that.

Was MuseScore running in full screen? And were you by chance doing something with drag-and-drop (for example, drop a file onto the MuseScore window to open it, or drop a palette element on your score)?

Note that if something like this happens ever again, you might be able to press Command+Option+Esc to bring up a system dialog that lets you force-quit specific applications. If you really suspect MuseScore is the cause of the problem, you can try force-quitting MuseScore using that dialog, instead of basically force-quitting the entire system.
