file name length (score name)
In ver 4, I can't see my full file name, too few chars show. I make
distinctions between score versions at the right end of names.
Since we don't have multiple tabs anymore, there is plenty of
room to increase the space for file names to full width of the page.

Windows has a limit on the total length of path+filename. (I assume that Mac and Linux do too, but I don't know.) Making ridiculously long filenames can push the full length of path+filename beyond that limit. Not a wise idea. Remains best to make fairly short filenames.

I agree, BUT, I don't consider 41 chars ridiculously long. In any case, Muse4 only
displays 23....ridiculously too small a limit IMO.
And forget the paths. I don't they display on sheet TAB (maybe there's an option).

I'm not talking about displaying those paths. If the path+filename gets too long, the file may not be able to be accessed AT ALL, or may be corrupted. There are several possibilities when this happens: all of them bad!
23 characters is near the beginning of "ridiculously long"; 41 is WAAYY into that territory. No matter what you think.

Mr "theHutch", I am grateful for your thoughts.

The default maximum length in Windows is around 260 characters (for the full path) but can be increased via a registry edit. It defaults to 260 for compatibility with some older APIs.

47 characters does seem somewhat long for a score's name. Can you share a few examples of why you need them to be quite so long?

I only go back to the days of 8.3 filenames in MS-DOS and remember the launch of Windows 95 which broke this 8.3 barrier.

SIX?!?!?
I remember eight on early IBM/3 and HP 3000 in mid to late '70s. What machine were you working on that limited filename to six characters?

one example I downloaded from MS Library (I call it) follows:
High_On_A_Mountain_Top_OlaBelleReed_G_v2.mscz
I added the "_G_v2" to indicate in key of G and my 2nd version.
In any case, the file name was already too long.
But I do like to see my "additions" so I know what I am working with.

OK that's a long file name but not ridiculously so. You could raise a request to show longer filenames in Musescore's UI, especially since there's no multi-tabbed mode. That would seem very reasonable to me.
As a workaround you could have a folder for:
OlaBelleReed
and name the file:
HighOnAMountainTop G v2
Not ideal but it might be workable.
An integrated score library manager would be even nicer, something like calibre has for eBooks.
If you are on Windows then you could make use of other columns in Windows Explorer for things like the composer, the key and the version. You can group by such columns so they can be very useful. Your actual filename would then only need the song title.

Did not this post "raise a request"??
That is what I was trying to do.

No, this is a support forum where fellow users try to help with your queries. In this case it appears your problem cannot be solved by a software setting or by showing you how to use an existing feature. You need a change in how the software functions and this in turn needs one of the developers to see merit in your request and decide to implement it.
You make such requests by adding them to the issue log via the green New issue button here:
https://github.com/musescore/MuseScore/issues
There are some guidelines here:

I can't get the green button to complete it's process.
I type stuff in, hit create, pops me back to blank box and
asks to enter stuff, again, again, and again.
Hmmm?

Ticked the boxes at the bottom of the form?
