Survey: music reading

• Nov 16, 2014 - 16:33

Hello everyone. I'm Chiara and I am about to graduate with a thesis that concerns music writing. If you are here, in the community of MuseScore, I think that the argument might be interested in and that you could offer me a great help!
I'm looking for musicians willing to cooperate: it is simply to perform certain music exercises and answer some questions about the exercises .It doesn't take more than 15 minutes of your time !!
For me it's really important to have answers, if possible, within this week.
Find all attached.
Thanks to those who welcome the request!
Chiara

3] The font is "traditional" - I learned from music marked like this. Also, I find it easier to read dynamics which are not too tall - I think this is because it distinguishes them from notes (which are tall - blobs with tails).
4] Version 3 too closely resembles chord symbols
5] I had not noticed but then I had not looked and nor had I played the pieces. I feel that squatter, bold numerals are best.
6] From easiest to most difficult - 5, 4, 2, 6, 1, 3
7] I find Number 7 more difficult to read than Number 1.
8] I do not like the appearance of Number 7. I have learned to read music over many years in a particular way and I find the wavy beams distracting.
9] It is distracting.
10] The little notes are not helpful. They disturb the rhythm of the piece as your eye scans it.
11] Never.
12] They are all equal and all equally bad, in my opinion. It is as if you had learned a language from childhood and now someone has decided that all the words shall be spelled in a different way now.

Perhaps it would be different if you asked someone who has only recently started to read music? I suggest you ask this. For information, I started reading music 40+ years ago, always tried to write it as I saw it (in mainly older classical and in brass band pieces) and taught myself to transpose (playing a Bb instrument helped).
