Pizzicato Strings
What I want to know is how to make the strings pizzicato for part of the piece and regular for the other part. (I'm in 1.3)

See http://musescore.org/en/node/50196. The process is the same in 1.3.
But you definitely should upgrade to 2.0. You don't know what you're missing. ;-)

I would love to upgrade to 2.0, but the sounds are just not as good as 1.3. There's just too much echo in them.

Aha! Don't let sounds stop you—you can use the same set of sounds from 1.3 in 2.0. See SoundFont .

The sounds are actually *tons* better. Much more realistic. But if you don't like the small amount of reverb that is added, you can simply turn that down in View / Synthesizer.
How do I go and change the sounds for 2.0? And how to I remove the reverb? (Neither of you two gave me details)

The link is in my comment above, but here it is again: http://musescore.org/en/node/36171

I also gave the menu item in my response. But more specifically, once you go to View / Synthesizer, click the Master Effects tab, then turn the Output towards the Dry side. I'd definitely recommend trying that before going back to the 1.3 soundfont. You'd have to anyhow, because even if you change to the 1.3 soundfont, it would still have reverb added in 2.0 by default (most people like reverb; that's why it's present in virtually all professionally recorded music).
