staves distance
hello
I would like to increase staves distance for the whole score (so the spacer is not relevant), but not for all instruments, only those who often has many lines over or below the system.
I can only find a way that increases the distance for all instruments, and that i not necessary, and takes up too much space on the screen.
regards

What do you mean by "only those who often has many lines over or below the system"?

Trombones often have notes 4-5 lines above system.
And shifting to concert key tenor- and baritone sax come far below system and mix with the instrument below.
I use the spacer, but have to put it in on each page of the score. Would be nice to do it only once for the whole score.
But not essential - if it proves to be a difficult thing to implement.

Check out "Style" > Edit General Style > Page. There you can change the default space between staves.
The notes above and below are on what is known as "Leger Lines".

yes, but it changes for all instruments, which is unnecessary

Open palette Breaks&Spacer and drag the staff spacer element to a measure. This spacer ensures a minimum distance between staves. Double click the element and drag the handle down to adjust spacing.

I do that, but have to do it on each page of the score.
I wanted to be able to do it for the whole score.
...or is there something I have misunderstood?

I tried the above advice but can't get it to do what I want. I have a simple vocal score with lots of space between its two staves. I followed the above advice: 1) open Breaks and Spacer, 2) cilck and hold on the rightmost Staff Spacer (looks like an I), 3) drag it to the first measure of the top stave, and let go the mouse. There is now a capital I type icon but not in the first measure; it moved itself over to be below the clef sign at the beginning of the stave. 4) double click on the I thingie and a blue box appears beneath it. Now by moving the spacer, I find I can increase the distance between the staves still more than it already is. But that is exactly the opposite of what I want. That space is too big to begin with, and I want to reduce it.
Is there any way to do this? Note that I'm not talking about simultaneous staves, that is, the treble and bass staves of a piano part that are played together. I'm talking about a single vocal part that runs on to multiple staves.
After writing the above, it occurs to me what the problem might be. That empty space between the two staves is there because it used to be filled with lyrics I deleted because I want to reformat the whole score, putting most of the lyrics together in a box below the melody. It looks like what I have to do is just create the score again from scratch. Ideally, one should be able to select a whole stave and move it around, just like words. That would be the dream solution.

I finally managed to get it to look more or less like I wanted, with less space between the staves, but I have no idea how I did it!

Try again.

Go back to the beginning of the score. Then click on the instrument label of the stave you want, with the secondary mouse button (i.e. the right button for a right-hand mouse). A short menu appears. Choose "Stave properties". That opens a new dialogue with properties for that particular stave. Then look for the option "Extra distance above stave." Fill in a value and test with "Apply" until you're happy. Voilà!
