Cannot change note head in drum set

• May 14, 2015 - 20:10

Hello,

Musescore 2.0.1 on Windows 8.1.

I'm trying to change the note head in a score with only a drumset as the instrument. No matter what note head I choose, it doesn't change. When I add a snare note, for example, and then press esc and select that note. In the Inspector, note section, I select Cross in the Head group, nothing changes. In the Palettes, if I expand the Note Heads and click/drag the XCircle over a note, it doesn't change the head. Is this intentional, or is it a possible bug?

Thanks

I *think* it's intentional, although I too find it surprising. The "correct" way to change heads for drum notes is via the drum set definition, though (Edit Drumset), and thus changing the head for all notes of a given "pitch".

Occasionally, I too would like to be able to choose a custom note head for some notes when scoring for percussion. For example, the Musescore's default sf2 conga instrument contains three assigned sounds--slap, tone and bass. I would to be able to denote a muted bass tone vs an open bass tone with a different note head/group while using the same sound, in other words, without having to assign the desired note head to a new sound, which is difficult to do since there is no audio preview function in the "Edit Drumset" dialog box.

I'm not sure I understand. You said the goal was to use this to indicate a muted versus open sound, so it sounds to me like you do want to assign the head to a new sound. You just want it to be easier to find the sound. That's fair enough, an audio preview could be useful. But the assignments are standardized according to General MIDI, so it's easy to get a list. See for instance https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_MIDI#Percussion and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_MIDI_Level_2#Drum_sounds. The first list will be supported by all GM-comaptible soundfonts, the second only those that also support level 2.
