melodies going to a different stave

I am transcribing some melodies with wide jumps (typical of wind or string instruments) for piano.

It is more convenient to let the odd notes in the melody go to a different stave than show notes with many leger lines. How can I tell MuseScore to treat these notes on a different stave as belonging to the same part? If necessary, the note heads should be joined too.
