New bug for tablature in 2.0.2

• Jul 19, 2015 - 17:10

In latest release there seams to be a new bug for tablature: The stems for voice 1 go down, the stems for voice 2 go up. The was not the case in the previous version. In normal notation everything is alright (see the attached file). Even existing files as the attached one show this behaviour.

Here is another bug: When inputting voice 2 in tablature the input cursor cannot be advanced with the arrow key to a new empty measure. If the measure already contains a note for voice 2, it works. There is no problem with voice 1. I did not try the other voices. This bug is really annoing as it slows down note entry in tablature very much.

Hmm. There is an option "Stem position" in Staff Properties / Advanced Style Properties / Note Values that can be set to Avove or Below. This mostly controls the stem direction of notes when there is only voice 1, but as of a change made for [#63651], it also controls voice 1 direction when there are multiple voices. That seems totally logical to me, but I guess people might expect to have voice 1 stems be below when there is only voice voice but above when there are multiple voices? That seems counter-intuitive to me, but maybe it is nevertheless typical and apparently how 2.0.1 worked? I'm not familiar enough with the conventions of tablature to know what is really expected.

I think perhaps really, the "Common" style is not a great choice when using multiple voices, and the "full" style (with stems drawn through the staff) is a better choice, and this style seems to work as I would naively expect - stems obey "normal" (as per standard staff) direction rules. Either that or use "Common" with the "Above" setting for stem directions.

I agree with you on the fact that it is really annoying for the flow. But I found a workaround! :)
So, when your measure is full, instead of using the right arrow to go to the next measure, use the "R" key
The cursor advance, ready to input the first note/number/letter of the next measure.
It works, and for all voices!

In a standard staff, this key allows to rewrite (Repeat) the previously entered note. In a TAB staff, I do not know exactly why, this feature is not the same (EDIT: or more exactly, you must press twice this R key for repeating the note previously entered, if it is your wish)

For now, although this is not ideal, and in pending of a fix, navigation in a Tab staff with these voices 2,3,4 is possible without real difficulty, and therefore, we will satisfy us of this!

@Mark: I'm also not familiar with the conventions of tablature. Are there really any? Looking at tablature books you will find lots of different styles. Many books do not have stems on tablatures which I always disliked. But if they have it's just the style which you showed in your book on lower page 287, which is as it worked in v2.0.1 and which I like very much. As voice 2 is mostly below voice 1 I think it is a bit confusing to see the stems inverse, especially as in standard notation it is the other way round.
You are right that this can be achieved with the setting. So this will work for me. This setting has not changed between versions. But as you described I now have to change this setting if the tabalature contains only 1 voice. This seems not very logical to me.

It appears the example at the bottom of page 287 of my book uses the "Full" style, not the "Common" style. The "Full" style was specifically intended to make rhythms and voices more clear and seems to me to be the better choice to use in multi-voice music, in my not-really-well-informed opinion as an outsider to the world of tablature.

I wonder if maybe the "Above" should just be the default, though, for the "Common" style? To me, the old way seems illogical in that voice 1 stems were down when there was only one voice but up if there were two. Wouldn't it make more sense for them to always be up? I am not saying it definitely is do; I am asking because I honestly do not know.
