Click and Drag to Adjust

• Jul 19, 2015 - 20:03

This is a feature that is missing that is found in Sibelius. When composing (especially with lyrics, detailed instruction and/or articulations, or extended range the leaves the staff) there are times when there is a section that has notes and lines or other text overlapping because of the amount of stuff there is. I know you can adjust space between systems by editing the Style under the Page tabs, but there are many times when I do not want this spacing to be consistent for the entire score. Please give us this ability or, at the very least, implement a magnetic layout such as that found in Sibelius to eliminate this problem. Thanks for your hard work and I hope that this is fixed so I can continue to support Musescore and end my reliance on Sibelius completely.

A spacer is indeed the solution, and it's already present. Magnetic layout is *MUCH* more complicated to implement, and while we gradually make improvements in automatic positioning, I wouldn't be expecting any major changes any time soon.

I believe I have used spacers before (perhaps I'm mistaken). However, to my knowledge, this is applied universally to a part for an entire page, rather than just a single line in a system. Also, as a side not, it is very difficult to predict how many spacers or how much of an adjustment to the staff spacing you need to rectify an issue. With click and drag, it is quick and easy to make the adjustment while simultaneously seeing if the problem has been corrected.

Spacers and drag work differently. A spacer affects the exact staff / system it is applied to, and only that staff/system. Whereas shift+drag affect the stafg it is applied to across all systems.

So, if you need more space between flute and oboe in one system only, use a spacer. If you need more space between flute and oboe *on all systems*, use shift+drag. Spacers can also increase distance between two adjacent systems, drag cannot.
